Main Points for A and B questions

A) The writer was feeling sad. For the evidence, we are going to include the line “Counting bells knelling classes to a close” as this shows that he feels time is going pass really slowly and this was due to the fact he is really sad when he heard the news of his sibling dying. The writer also felt embarrassed and this can be proven from the lines in stanza 3, evident when the strangers told him they were “sorry for the trouble” and “whispering informed strangers that he was the eldest” made him feel embarrassed. He also feel regretful as the poem states that “I saw him for the first time in six weeks” this line shows that the writer had last seen his brother 6 weeks ago . However, his brother is now dead. Thus, he is regretful as he feel that he should spend more time with his brother and cherish him more while he is alive.

B) The speaker uses several literal devices. The first one he used is onomatopoeia. This can be supported from stanza 3 of the poem. In the line “the baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram”, “cooed and laughed” is the onomatopoeia. This sets a very awkward mood as it is ironic how the baby is ignorant about the surroundings and still being so happy when everyone else is so sad. The other literal device used is personification. The line “And candles soothed the bedside” showed the use of a personification. This helped to lessen the heavy and depressed mood in the poem, as the candles seem to bo comforting the speaker and the people present.

Analysis of Mid Term Break

This poem is mainly focusing on the speaker’s childhood memory. This was a really saddening break, not a relaxing and happy one.
The first stanza is informing us that the speaker is waiting at the sick bay for his neighbor to fetch him and does not make up a clue that what was the purpose of the break. However, the fact that the speaker is waiting at the sick bay give the sense that something is wrong. Also, the word “kneeling” describes the slow steady strokes of a bell at a funeral service like the sound of an old school bell announcing the changes of class in school. The use of the word 'knelling' rather than 'tolling' for the school bell has connotations of death.
The second stanza shows how devastating this tragic accident affected the speaker’s family. The fact that “He had always taken funerals in his stride” shows that this tragic accident is a really huge blow to his father as the speaker saw his father crying. In contrast, in the third stanza, the baby 'cooed and laughed and rocked the pram', showing that in some aspects, family life went on as usual and that the baby was immature and did not understand what was happening.
The third and fourth stanzas are linked by enjambment and describes the speaker’s feelings on confronting the people who paid their respects. The speaker also felt embarrassed as the old man shook his hand and expressed his sorrow. This was probably uncomfortable and uncommon to the speaker as he was in a situation of reversed role. He was also knowledgeable about the “whispers” that he was the eldest child in the family.
The second and fifth stanzas are also linked and show how differently the speaker’s mother reacted as compared to his father after the tragic accident. As she 'coughed out angry tearless sighs', it shows that she was too upset to cry and probably did not have any tears to cry out anymore.
In the fifth stanza, Heaney describes in a way that the speaker did not realize the body was his brother’s as the poem mentioned that the ambulance brought the 'corpse'. However, in the sixth stanza, the speaker realized it as he went alone to see the body of his brother. He describes that the presence of snowdrops and soothed his feelings. The speaker again uses enjambment to link this stanza with the seventh, mentioning that his brother now looked paler than the last time he had seen him six weeks previously. The metaphor 'Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple', poppies being colour of blood as well as a sign of the dead. The final line of the seventh stanza tells us that the little boy was not ran over by the car but banged on one side as he had no “gaudy scars”.
'Mid-Term Break' ends with a single line 'A four foot box, a foot for every year' describes how young the boy was and how small the coffin was. The poem begins with devoid of emotion. Then it progresses into a phase of describing discomfort and difficult emotions in the presence of strangers.

Typical day in school by Tay Wei Sheng

As the morning school bell tore the silent air apart,
It signalled the start of another fun and enriching school day.

Some listened attentively and assiduously copied down notes,
while some just doodled and drowned in the teacher's ponderous monotone.

As the recess bell rang shrilly,
Everyone zoomed out like rockets, signalling a hubbub of activity.

Some went to eat as hunger was a devil, prodding their stomachs relentlessly,
while some went to play, having a whale of their time.

As the dismissal bell sliced the air like a razor-sharp knife,
It signalled the end of another fun and enriching school day.

Some idled in school, reluctant to go home,
while some rushed home, though just released from firing squad.

While everyone looked forward to the next school day...

Introduction to Figurative Language

1) In the poem, I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud, an example of a simile is "I wandered lonely as a cloud", while examples of personification are: "Fluttering and dancing in the breeze", "Tossing their heads in a sprightly dance.", "The waves beside them danced" and "Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee." The poet chose a cloud to be a simile in his poem as a cloud usually floats very slowly in the sky and its movement is barely visible. Thus, it best describes the loneliness of the person in the poem as it shows that the person is very lonely and can only move around aimlessly. In the statements showing examples of personification, the poet has used words like dancing, sprightly and glee, to show the comparison between the person and others as a form of emphasis.
2) I like this poem as it is very simple and easy to understand, yet leaves me a great impression after reading it. The poem shows great use of simile and personification, though it does not have any metaphors. The similes and personification used show vast contrast between the feelings and atmosphere of the person and others. This emphasises hugely on the lonely person which i the main character in the poem and has successfully conveyed the message what the poet wants to tell the reader which makes it easy to understand the poem, thus leaving a great impression and letting the reader to enjoy reading it.

Favourite Poem (I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee;
A poet could not be but gay,
In such a jocund company!
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

My reflections after eating at a Little India restaurant

On 14 May, our Language Arts teacher, Ms Kala, brought our class, as well as others, to a Little India restaurant, called Spice Queen) to have a taste of Indian food, especially chappatti, after going through Village by the Sea with us. Our teacher chose that restaurant as it was quite a famous one and the chef, as well. The chef, Chef Devagi Sanmugam, is an author of 16 cookbooks, as well as a food columnist for magazines. She also owns a culinary consultancy firm Devagi's Epicurean World Pte Ltd.
At the restaurant, we were packed like sardines and fortunately, my group of friends and I quickly got ourselves a seat each. For hygiene's sake, we were told to wash our hands before we could eat. After that, Ms Kala introduced Chef Devagi Sunmugam briefly to us and the chef herself introduced Indian food to us and we indeed gained new insights. Without further ado, we took the serviette and queued up to take the food. The snake-like queue was really long and each of us waited a long time before we got our food. However, a number of us did not have a chance to taste the tendoori chicken as it went out and it was apparently not enough for everyone of us. However, the service there was really good and before we got to the place where got our food, an amicable female staff gave each of us a piece of koropok and gave those a second time if they requested for it.
They gave us a variety of dishes, such as Indian rice with gravy, cubed potatoes, tendoori chicken(not for me) and chappatti, not forgetting lime juice. Without it, we will definitely not be able to eat the food. It was really spicy! The rice and chappatti was fine but not for the potatoes. Many of us were complaining about the spiciness and for me, I could literally feel my stomach burning! For some of them, they actually took their own drnk to drink as the lime juice was not enough.
After our stomachs were filled, we went back home ourselves by taking the Little India MRT train as the MRT station was just beside the restaurant. For those who wanted to take school transport back to school, had to wait a little more. I felt that it was indeed an enriching and enjoyable experience for me. Firstly I got to see a famous chef in person and secondly, I learnt more about Indian culture including eating the food with our bare hands. We also got to know about the different kinds of Indian food. Last but not least, I interacted with my friends at the same time and I really enjoyed the entire time.

Village by the Sea Presentation (Importance of Adaptation and Changes)

Changes
  1. A new fertilizer complex is going to be built im Thul.
  2. The paddy fields, the sea, fish and cattle are going to be affected, like being polluted or being removed.
  3. Jobs will be affected, like those fishermen who depend on fishing for a living, since the fish will die due to pollution of the sea.

How has the changes helped Hari?

  1. Hari went to Bombay to look for jobs alone alone, thus making him more courageous and more initiative due to the changes.
  2. He learnt to be independent, which is the main benefit of adapting to a new environment, Bombay.
  3. He learnt different skills, like watch-mending and cooking chapattis.
  4. He has learnt adaptation skills due to change in lifestyle in Bombay.
  5. He learnt to be frugal and thrifty, while being wise at spending money.
  6. He learnt to be caring and helpful towards people as he helped Mr Panwallah while he is ill.
  7. He learnt to be diligent and not be lazy, idling each day.
  8. He learnt to make his own decisions and not always seek advice from his family, thus learning to be decisive.

Adaptations

  1. The people have to go to Bombay to look for jobs.
  2. If they are unable to find jobs in Bombay, they will have to be beggars living in the streets.
  3. Another option would be they be workers at the fertilizer complex, which is definitely not feasible as the job requires skills which they do not have.

How has the adaptations helped Hari?

  1. Hari need not depend on fishing to earn a living as he has learnt watch-mending skills which he can depend on for a living. It will be more competitive to depend on fishing to earn a living in Thul as the fishing is one of the main jobs in Thul and watch-mending would definitely not be competitive as not many people in Thul know how to mend watches. Furthermore, when the fertilizer complex is built in Thul, Hari can help to mend watches for the people who come to Thul.
  2. Hari also learnt to be independent as the new environment and the change in lifestyle forces him to support himself without the help of his family.
  3. If people go to Thul to work at the fertilizer complex, there will be more jobs in Bombay.
  4. He learnt that being laxy would not do him good in the future.
  5. He also met many kind and helpful people like Jagu and Mr Panwallah.

A Modern Fairytale

A) Cinderella

  1. Cinderella's mother was dead and her father married a widow with two dayghters. Het stepmother did not like her and only left the bad things for her.
  2. Cinderella was not allowed to rest and worked all day. A ball was to be held and Cinderella was not allowed to go.
  3. A fairy turned her ragged dress into a beautiful one and sent her to the ball in a couch with seven white horses. She then had a wonderful time at the ball.
  4. Cinderella married the prince and lived happily ever after.

Hari and Lila's Story

  1. Their mother was sick and their father was a drunkard. They had to take care of themselves and life was hard.
  2. Hari could not find a job and they could hardly carry on in life.
  3. When Hari went to Bombay, he found a job and learnt watch-mending skills from Mr Panwallah.
  4. Hari earned enough money and has made plans for the future including mending watches to earn money. Their mother was also recovered as the Mr De Silva sent her to the hospital to seek proper medication.

B) When Hari was in Bombay, he did not receive help of magical nature. It was partly due to Jagu's help by giving him a job in his shop and Mr Panwallah's help by teaching him watch-mending skills. It was also partly due to Hari's ability to adapt to a new environment and work hard.

C) I agree that The Village by the Sea is an adventure story to a large extent. An adventure story is a story based on the adventure pattern which is a person goes on an adventure to accomplish a mission. Then he faces problems. However, he recieves help from other people and manages to overcome the obstacles. Finally, he accomplishes the mission and returns victorious. In The Village by the Sea, Hari goes to Bombay to find a job. He had difficulties adapting. Jagu and Mr Panwallah helps him to overcome the problems. Hari managed to earn some money and had learnt watch-mending skills.

D) In The Village by the Sea, Hari and Lila are the protagonists. Lila was cool-headed as she was not angry or upset when Hari left. She only felt confused. She was able to prioritize well and had a positive mindset. She felt that life must go on and did not kept on worrying for Hari. Hari was hardworking for Hari. Hari was hardworking and worked hard in Bombay. He was also courageous enough to go to Bombay alone to find work. He was also responsible to take care of the family.

Amish Lifestlye Reflection

The Amish people separated from the society because they are very devout in their faith and they have been using horse-drawn power to carry out daily routines such as using bullock carts as a mode of transportation. Rejecting labour-saving technologies that might make one less dependent on community is because of their anti-individualist orientation. They do not permit electricity or telephones in their homes. By restricting access to television, radio, and telephones, the Amish are better able to keep the modern world from intruding into their home life. They value splicity and self denial over comfort, convenience and leisure. The Amish have long preferred farming as a way of life instead of doing things which include technology as in their perspective, they think that families can be best maintained in a rural environment and families are very important to them.
Although families are very important and family harmony is always maintained, disobedience of children is never allowed. Dissatisfaction can be verbally expessed but profanities are prohibited one can expect swift punishment. For Amish chiildren, they can only graduate from formal education after eighth grade but they have to learn how to do adult tasks after that.
The Amish believe that classroom learning is insufficient, hence the boys learn farming and go to the field and barn with their father and the girls learn homemaking skills, working inside the house, alongside their mother. To the Amish, farming is not really a job or a career, but part of their life which can help in nurutring families in values such as hardwork, frugality, responsibility, simplicity and family cooperation. Horses play an important role in farming as they plow, cultivate and harvest crops.
The Amish do not really do anything for recreation as they appreciate and would prefer simplivity. All they do for recreation is barn-raising and quilt-making and other things that we would feel boring and tiring. They enjot the simplicity of these activities where they learn the importance of teamwork, for example, building a barn. In general, they enjoy doing activities that allow them to work with one another apart from making a quilt.
In my opinion, there are some advantages of leading an Amish lifestlye. Firstly, Amish people can lead a peaceful and undisturbed lifestlye and do not really have much stress, unlike in the modern society where it is very hectic and busy. In the modern society, we do not even have time to connect with our relatives and friends and to bond with them, unlike the Amish who spend of their time socializing with anyone. Also, by leading an Amish lifestyle, we can, in a way, save the Earth, as by using electricity and modern machinery, it will emit carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, which are very harmful to the Earth. Moreover, we will not have any distractions in our life if we cannot play compter games. In this way, we will be able to focus on our education.
However, there are definitely disadvantages of it. One disadvantage is that for most of us, we are usually very active and may not be able to tolerate the extreme tranquilness and stillness in the area. There are also not many sports we can do over there. Furthermore, we cannot have a share of the modern technology out there and we will definitely be tempted by the use of it. we will also not know about any discoveries made or anything, we will only know what is happening in the area we are living in.
Hence, in my point of view, I will choose not to lead an Amish lifestyle.

Discussion & AQ Exercise-Terrorism (Articles:"The Terror Begins At Home" and "Turning The Taliban"

1) The writer was trying to say that the spirit of the American people is not as good as compared to other countries who tried to rebuild the damaged building and return to the targeted bus lines the day after bombing. However, for America, the Twin Towers are still not rebuilt. If the American spirit is strong, the damaged buildings should be rebuilt as a form of defiance and ordinary citizens should be trained to handle disasters and terror attacks.
2) These attempts to lure away thousands of Taliban with oofers of jobs and money and persuading the rest to make peace have not been successful. Evidence such as quotes from Pakistani citizens like "But the young man say it won't work" and "If you are commited to jihad, you won't leave for a mountain of money." are used to support their view.
AQ Exercise
1) Suggestions such as training ordinary citizens to handle disasters and terror attacks and to build resillience instead of letting the government take care of the citizens have relevance for Singapore.
2) Posters and advertisements xan be frequently put up to constantly remind Singaporeans to have the united spirit in them so as to ensure Singaporeans political and social stability. Only with the united spirit, not only can we ensure Singaporean's political and social stability, Singaporeans can also build resillience against terrorism.

Script for the scene from Lamb to the Slaughter

Mary Maloney: ( takes the broom and sweeps the floor, then arranged the chairs, tables, and finally washed her hands and sat down slowly on a chair)

*(Clock starts ticking and Mary Maloney looks at it from time to time)*

*(Pull a chair over the floor and make a noise as if a car has came and stopped on the gravel, then put it down to make a bang! sound as if the car’s door is closing)-do this hidden from the audience’s view*

Mary Maloney: Oh hello, my darling! (opens arm to welcome her husband)
Patrick: Hullo, my dear.
Mary Maloney: (takes his coat(jacket) and hangs it in an imaginary closet.)
Patrick: (Takes large steps a bit unsteadily (don’t overdo it!) towards a chair and slumps into it and sits leg over leg)
Mary Maloney: (Makes the drinks, slowly and gracefully and smiling and after that passes the strong one to Patrick)
Mary Maloney: My dear Patrick, you must be really tired!
Patrick: Yes, I am tired (and drowns the whole glass of whiskey in one gulp although there is still half left)
Patrick: (Stands up, and walks like how he did just now to refill his glass of whiskey)
Mary Maloney: (Flies out of the chair and shouted,) I’ll get it for you my darling Patrick!
Patrick: Sit down! (say it patiently)
Patrick: (Comes back with a glass of dark amber whiskey)
Mary Maloney: Honey, shall I get your slippers for you?
Patrick: No(says it lifelessly)
Mary Maloney: ( Stares at Patrick drinking his whiskey)
Mary Maloney: You know, I think it is a shame to keep a policeman as senior as you walking around the whole day.
Patrick: (Silent, and sitting very still)
Mary Maloney: Should I get you some cheese, darling? I didn’t make any supper today because it is Thursday.
Patrick: No(a bit pissed)
Mary Maloney: If you’re too tired to eat out, it’s still not too late. There’s plenty of meat and stuff in the freezer, and you can have it right there in your sit and not even move an inch/
Patrick: I don’t want it(pissed)
Mary Maloney: But darling, you must eat! I’ll go get some stuff for you, then you can have it or not, as you wish.
Mary Maloney: (Walks out of her chair)
Patrick: Go on, sit down. (indicates Mary’s chair) Just for a minute, sit down.
Mary Maloney: (starts to feel a bit frightened) (sat down on her chair slowly, watching Patrick all the time with her large, bewildered eyes)
Patrick: (Finishes his second drink and stares at the glass, frowning)
Patrick: Listen, I’ve got something important to tell you.
Mary Maloney: What is it, dear, what’s the matter?(a bit panicky)
Patrick: This may be a bit of shock for you, but I have thought about it a good deal and I’ve decided the only thing to do is to tell you right away. I hope you won’t blame me too much.
Patrick: (Starts talking gibberish to Mary Maloney, and her face becomes more and more frightened and angry word after word)
Patrick: So there it is. I know it’s kind of a bad time to be telling you, but there simply wasn’t any other way. Of course, I’ll give you alimony and see you’re looked after. But please, don’t make a fuss about this. It wouldn’t be very good for my job.
Mary Maloney: (breathes heavily, looks a bit dazed)
Mary Maloney: I’ll get the supper.
Mary Maloney: (walks across the room unsteadily and opens the imaginary freezer, and takes the lamb leg on the chair, then later walks a bit more unsteadily from the weight of the lamb leg towards Patrick)
Patrick: (looking out of the window) For God’s sake, don’t make supper for me, I’m going out!(shouting)
Mary Maloney: (walks behind Patrick and swings the lamb’s leg which hits Patrick. Patrick sways a bit, and crashed down.)
Mary Maloney: (blinks, and looks at the leg of lamb she was holding, then at Patrick, and looks surprised.)

Living Room~
(n): The Living Room Scene
(pm): *waver slightly and collapses onto the ground*
(mm):*shocked expression and drops leg of the lamb*
(mm mind): So I killed him. What do I do? The penalty’s fine, in fact, it’ll be a relief. But what about the child? What will they to do women with an unborn child? Will they kill us both? Or will they wait until the tenth month? * then she walks away to the kitchen*

Kitchen~
(n): The Kitchen Scene
(n): it was extraordinary how clear her mind was after murdering her husband, as Mary Maloney shoved the leg of lamb into the oven. She wasted no time and runs to the room.

Room~
(n): The Bedroom Scene
(n): Mary Maloney sat at her dressing corner and tried to tidy up and look presentable. She attempted a smile. It looked peculiar. She smiled again.
(mm): Hello Sam! *smiles brightly* I’d like some potatoes and… yes, I think a can of peas. Thank you. *curls hair and smiles and leaves the room, grabbing her coat* (walks out of classroom)
(n): Mary Maloney takes one last look at her husband and leaves for the grocery shop.

Grocery Shop~

(mm)(walks to the classroom): Hello, Sam!
(s): Good evening, Mrs Maloney! How may I help you?
(mm): Yes, I’d like some potatoes please…yes, and I think a can of peas. Patrick’s decided that he’s too tired to eat out tonight, and now he’s caught me without vegetables. We usually eat out on Thursdays, you see.
(s): Oh, I see. Then how about meat, Mrs Maloney?
(mm): Oh I’ve got meat. I’ve got a nice leg of lamb out of the freezer. I don’t know much about cooking it frozen though, but I’m taking a chance on it this time. Do you think it’ll be all right?
(s): Personally, I don’t think it makes any difference. Would you like these Idaho potatoes?
(mm): Yes, two of those please.
(s): Okay, then how about afterwards? What are you going to give him for dessert?
(mm): Well, what would you suggest, Sam?
(s): Hmm… How about a nice big slice of cheesecake? I know Patrick likes that.
(mm): Perfect. He’ll love it.
(s):*places stones in the plastic bag* All right, thank you and have a good evening, Mrs Maloney.
(mm): Thank you! And goodnight Sam! *smiles and leaves*
Walking Home~
(n): As Mrs Maloney walks home with her grocery, she prepares herself.
(mm mind): All I’m doing now is returning to my husband, who is waiting for his supper. And I must cook it good, as tasty as possible, because he’s terribly tired. And if I enter the house, I shouldn’t find anything unusual, or tragic or terrible, and naturally, it would be a shock.

Living Room~
(n): As Mary entered the house, she saw her husband and was overcome with grief and horror. Mind you, she wasn’t expecting to find anything, she was just returning home with her groceries.
(mm): *shocked and rushes to her husband’s side and kneels down, trying to wake him up as she cries* Patrick darling, are you all right? Wake up! Speak to me!
(n): Immediately, she fishes out her handphone and dials ‘999’.
(mm): *immediately takes out phone from pocket and dial ‘999’ and waits for a while*
(p): Hello? Who is this speaking?
(mm): Quick! Come quick! Patrick’s dead! This is Mary Maloney!
(p): What happened? Who’s dead? Are you sure?
(mm): I think so! I came back home from the grocery shop and he’s dead! My husband, Patrick Maloney! I don’t know how it happened! Come quick!
(p): Rest assured, we’re on our way. Stay there and do not move, Mrs Maloney.

Mary Maloney's Diary Entry

Dear Diary,

I am now feeling a mixture of feelings-sad, scared and relieved. I can't believe I murdered my own husband! But I can't help it as he actually said he wanted a divorce with me when I was pregnant! Furthermore, I had served him faithfully and devotedly and he actually said he wanted a divorce with me! Though that, I must admit that I still feel a little sad for my husband as we had been together for so long. But whatever I am thinking right now will not change this whole incident. After all, I can't rewind time...
Around 5 pm when Patrick was drinking his whiskey after he returned home, he actually told me that he wanted a divorce but offered to give me alimony. At that time, I refused to believe what he said and went to cook a leg of lamb for supper. However, I had no choice but to face the truth as when I carried the leg of lamb upstairs, he told me not to make supper and said that he was going out. Apparently, he did not appreciate what I had done for him. At that point of time, I was very angry and without a seccond thought, I hit him with the leg of lamb. To my utter shock, I actually killed him! Immediately, I thought of a plan. After that, I went to Sam's grocery shop and pretended to buy ingredients to cook supper for Patrick. In this way, I can make use of Sam as an alibi. When I went home, I called the detectives, who are Patrick's friends, and told them a lie. I cried and pretended not to know about this murder. Later part, I got them to eat the leg of lamb which is the evidence!
Although I had escaped arrest today, I know that I can never lead a peaceful life forever. I must continue to act as I know that justice will catch up with me one day.

Judge's arguments for and against Mary accused of the murder of Patrick

Judge's arguments for Mary being accused of the murder of Patrick...

  1. She commited a serious crime.
  2. She lied to the detectives.
  3. She used Sam as her alibi as a form of a backup.
  4. There was no good reason for her to murder Patrick.
  5. She was too impulsive when she carried out the murder.
  6. She lied to Sam even though he was innocent.
  7. She destroyed the evidence(leg of lamb as a form of a weapon)
  8. Patrick offered to give her alimony.

Judge's arguments against Mary being accused of the murder of Patrick...

  1. Patrick was at fault because he wanted a divorce with Mary.
  2. Mary is pregnant at that time, hence she carried out the murder probably due to depression.
  3. Mary was very devoted to her husband and was very upset when she realised that her husband was leaving her.
  4. The murder was unintentional.
  5. Mary was not conscious when the murder was carried out as what Patrick told her was probably a great blow to her.
  6. Patrick did not care for Mary's feelings as he should not have told her when she was pregnant.
  7. Mary had a mixture of feelings when she murdered Patrick but could not help it as she was too angry.

Movie review of "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief""

The gist of the movie "Percy Jack and the Lightning Thief" is about Percy Jackson, son of Posseidon, god of the sea, being accused by Zeus, Posseidon's brother, of stealing the lightning bolt which is the universe's most powerful weapon, and if the lightning bolt was not returned in 14 days, there would be war between them. In school, Percy Jackson had trouble reading english words but when the class went on a trip to a museum, he could read those greek words. And it was at the museum where his life changed totally. His teacher, a bat-like monster, demanded the lightning bolt from him but fortunately, Mr Brunner who was his Latin teacher was actually Chiron,a Centaur, half-horse and half-man and rescued him with the monster escaping. After that incident, Percy Jackson knew that he was half blood and also received a pen which was actually a sword from Mr Brunner. Percy was then brought to Camp-Half Blood which was a training ground for all half-bloods and realises that his best friend, Grover, was a satyr and his protector. Percy's mother then got captured in a Minotaur attack. Hades, one of the three gods, threatened to kill Percy's mother if he did not give the lightning bolt to him. In the end, Percy together with Grover and Annabeth journeyed to the underworld with the three pearls and along the way meeting monsters. When they reached there, they found out that Percy was framed by Luke as the shield that he gave them contained the lightning bolt. Fortunately, Hades' wife shot him with the lightning bolt and he fainted. As there were only three pearls, Grover decided and let the others leave without him. After that, Percy fought with Luke and after defeating him, Percy went to Zeus. In the end, he returned the lightning bolt and told the truth.

I like this movie because of the different types of monsters and the way Percy and his two friends battled them. It was very thrilling to see them how they handled the monsters and I was practically sitting at the edge of my seat while watching the movie! Though that, I felt that there could have been a struggle between Hades and Percy to make the movie more interesting. Also, the movie was a much shorter version of the storybook. Some parts such as Percy fighting the Ares, the God of War was not included in the movie. Characters such as Nancy Boofit were not included too. Nevertheless, I feel that this is a movie not to be missed!

100-word essay on why I like the book better than the movie
I like the book more than the movie mainly because the book has more fights and struggles between Percy Jackson and the different creatures he faced which makes the booking more thrilling and interesting, unlike the movie which includes only two fights-fight between Medusa and the Hydra. One thing I like about the book is that the description of each creature is very vivid and I could imagine the image of the creature. Also, in the movie, I feel that the part when Percy Jackson went to Hades for negotiation was to boring and not at all engaging except when he almost released the hellhounds. There was almost no struggle between Percy Jackson and Hades. In the book, the best part was during the fight between Percy Jackson and Ares, the god of war. I thought initially that Percy Jackson would not win Ares but would not die as Percy Jackson was not very experienced in fighting, but instead, Percy Jackson won after great struggle.

50-word passage taken from the Book
He slashed againand I was forced to jumponto dry land. I tried to sidestep, to get back to the water, but Ares seemed to know what I wanted. He outmanoeuvred me, pressing so hard I had to put all my concentration on not getting sliced into pieces. I kept backing away from the surf. I couldn't find any opening to attack. His sword had a reach a metre longer than Anaklusmos.

Ten differences between the Book and the Movie of "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief"

1) Characters such as Clarrise and Nancy Bobofit were in the book but not in the movie.
2) There was a fight between Ares and Percy Jackson in the book but not in the movie.
3) The book talked about Thalia, the daughter of Zeus, being the pine tree but the movie did not.
4) The hydra was included in the movie but not in the book.
5) The Chimera was included in the book but not in the movie.
6) Percy Jackson and Annabeth entered the trap at the water park in the book but not in the movie.
7) Both the lightning bolt and the helmet of darkness was stolen in the book but only the lightning bolt was stolen in the movie.
8) It was Ares who stole the lightning bolt in the book while it was Luke who stole it in the movie.
9) Percy Jackson was attacked by the poisonous scorpion in the book but it was not included in the movie.
10) Percy Jackson was given the three pearls directly in the book while he had to go through many difficulties before receiving the three pearls in the movie.

Movie review of "Avatar"

Basically, the gist of the movie "Avatar" is about the sky people who are the humans trying to drive off the native humanoid race called Na'vi who inhabits a palnet called "Pandora" so that they can mine precious and valuable material scattered throughout the place. In exchange for a spinal surgery to cure his paralysed legs, the war paraplegic veteran named Jake Sully is supposed to gather information from the Na'vi using an avatar identity. The humans created machines that could connect their mind to the avatar's mind. However, when Jake knew the evil intentions of Colonel Quaritch, the leader of the army, he decided to protect Pandora instead. Colonel Quaritch became restless and went for war against Pandora, destroying many living things on that planet. Jake became the leader in the war after Neytiri's father died during the first invasion of the humans and after Jake caught the red bird, the most important of all kinds. With the combination of all the tribes on Pandora, Pandora eventually won the battle and Jake remained on that planet after that.

I find this movie extremely thrilling and attention-grabbing as there are many creative and interesting things such as mushroom-like plants that could shrink to an extremely small size when being touched. The movie had also emphasized on the process in which Jake learnt the essential skills as an avatar. These details may be minor but they really tell us a lot about the life in the Na'vi tribe. In my own opinion, the most exciting part was during the war where I can feel a sense of unity on the planet of Pandora. This movie is no typical movie as it includes "people" the height of 3m and many other unusual stuff. Even though I watched the movie in 2D, I still feel that it was a movie worth watching and I believe the movie would be even better in 3D as you will definitely feel as though you are in the movie itself. This movie had really left me a very deep impression. It is a movie highly recommended for all to watch!

Ten Questions about "Avatar"

  1. Why wasn't Jake Sully accompanied with more people when they first went to Pandora?
  2. How did the humans bring so many large military machines to Pandora?
  3. Why didn't Jake Sully know about the evil intentions of Colonel Quaritch?
  4. Why must Jake Sully record himself everytime he returns?
  5. How did the humans find out about Pandora?
  6. How did the humans know about the valuable minerals hidden in Pandora?
  7. Why didn't the Na'vi tribe suspect Jake Sully initially and instead brought him into the tribe?
  8. How did Jake Sully bond with Toruk, the most important creature in Pandora, when others being more experienced than Jake cannot?
  9. Did the humans know about the range of dangerous and wild creatures which can be found on Pandora?
  10. Were the military machines specially designed to defend against the ferocious creatures in Pandora?

The Combined Story of " The Father " and " Paper "

Characters: Tay Soon, Yee Lian, Mui Mui and sibling and Dr Soo

Climax: The part when the shares dropped drastically and the aftermath

Resolution: Tay Soon decided to turn over a new leaf after being out of jail

The Combined Story of " The Father " and " Paper "

Thunder growled in the distance like a bad-tempered bear as tumultuous, ragged clouds loomed ahead like a heavy curtain. The first drops beat out a hesitant rhythm on the window.
"Pit...Pat...Pit...Pat..."
"Pitter..Pitter...Pat"
The agonising rattle of the metal bars reverberated in the prison as they shook under the impact of his fists. Anger rose like a mealstrom, threatening to overwhelm me. If I had not made that grave mistake, Mui Mui would not had died and my family would not need to live in a dilapidated rented one-room flat! It rained incessantly as scenes of the incident flooded my mind gradually... The thought of possessing that large and grand bungalow had already locked itself in Tay Soon's mind and soon influenced his wife, Yee Lian and his two children.
Then, on a particular day, Yee Lian spoke to Tay Soon," Do you know that shares recently had gone up? Dr Soo bought his shares for four dollars and now they are worth seven dollars? And you can guess how much money they have earned now."
As expected, Tay Soon invested in the shares immediately and soon earned a decent amount of money, enough to clear the down payment and continued to invest. On an especially unlucky day, Tay Soon looked at the stocks market and inexplicable fear jabbed him. It had actually dropped drastically! It cannot be...
Yee Lian told him immediately," Sell...Sell your shares now.”
However, Tay Soon ignored her advice. In the end, Tay Soon lost most of his savings! From that day onwards, Tay Soon went out to drink everyday using his only savings left. When he came back, he would always beat Yee Lian and his two children, especially Mui Mui as her whines irritated him the most and she would always get severely injured everynight. Till one night, it was also raining and Mui Mui was found lying unconscious on the floor and was later pronounced dead! Tay Soon was of course arrested for manslaughter and was charged a jail sentence of twenty years...
Suddenly, the deafening sound of thunder jolted him out of his trance. He was going to be out of jail in just a month's time and had decided to turn over a new leaf and not let his family suffer.

Dangers of blogging and how to prevent

Though there are advantages of blogging such as having an opportunity to express ourselves, there are also dangers of blogging. These dangers include publishing information about ourselves like name, age, address, telephone number or any other personal information. This is because invasion of personal information may lead to undesirable consequences like harassment of strangers.

Also, while blogging provides an opportunity for you to express yourself, it also opens a window into your personal life. Details of your personal life should not be shared to public as blogging has become a common place and it has risks that should not be ignored.

Hence, there are some ways which can prevent these dangers. Firstly, you should not post in advance about locations you will be or about areas that you live in or near. Next, refrain from posting a picture. Pictures can invite unwanted trouble. Lastly, do not engage in dialogues as you may accidentally leak out personal information.

To conclude, blogging can be a great outlet and channel only if good blogging practices are carried out.
